So, the Alter Südfriedhof served as Munich’s main cemetery for many years. It was established in 1563, due to overcrowding at the city’s older burial grounds. Over time, it was expanded and redesigned, reflecting changing tastes and styles.
Due to the closing of another cemetery, Duke Wilhelm V made this cemetery the main burial ground.
The cemetery was closed as a main burial point in 1970 but continues to be maintained to this day.
