TheAngel of Peace isn’t just a beautiful sculpture. It’s a monument with a powerful message. It was erected to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the end of the Franco-Prussian War, a conflict that had a profound impact on Europe. More than just celebrating a victory, the Angel of Peace was intended as a symbol of hope for a future free from war and filled with understanding between nations.
And the man tasked with bringing this vision to life? Ferdinand von Miller, a renowned sculptor who poured his skill and artistry into creating this iconic figure.
This symbol was presented to the public in 1899, in the hopes that it would stand as a reminder to bring peace to those who lived through war.
Why an Angel? Angels are often used as symbols of peace, hope, divine intervention, and protection. They represent a connection to something higher, suggesting a desire for a more peaceful and harmonious world. In this context, the angel embodies the desire for peace to prevail over conflict.
Why Golden? Gold signifies something precious and valuable, highlighting the immense importance of peace and the golden color reflects light, symbolizing hope, optimism, and a bright future.
The Angel of Peace statue itself is approximately 6 meters (about 20 feet) tall. The entire monument, including the column, reaches a height of 38 meters (about 125 feet).
The viewing platform is at the base of the column, not in the statue or on the statue.
