We have escaped the city bustle and headed to a truly unique landmark in the heart of the Englischer Garten: the Chinesischer Turm, or Chinese Tower! This isn’t just a tower, it’s a lively beer garden and a symbol of Munich’s connection to the world!
So, the Chinesischer Turm wasn’t built in China; it was built right here in Munich! It was constructed in 1789, as part of the Englischer Garten’s original design. The park and the tower were made by Sir Benjamin Thompson (later Count Rumford), an American-born British scientist and advisor to the Bavarian government.
The design was inspired by pagoda architecture. These were all the rage with westerners.
The original tower was destroyed during World War II, but it was rebuilt in 1952, thanks to the efforts of the people of Munich. It shows how they are connected to the park.
What makes the Chinesischer Turm so special?
Well, first of all, the beer garden at its base. The Chinesischer Turm is surrounded by one of Munich’s largest and most popular beer gardens. It’s a place where you can relax and enjoy a traditional Bavarian beer and a pretzel, surrounded by the beauty of the Englischer Garten.
Also, you can hear live music. During the summer months, a brass band plays traditional Bavarian music from the tower’s balcony, adding to the festive atmosphere.
And it can be enjoyed by people of all ages! The Chinesischer Turm is a popular destination for families. The kids can play in the park while adults enjoy a beer.
There are also winter festivals! During the Christmas season, the Chinesischer Turm hosts a charming Christmas market, complete with twinkling lights, festive decorations, and mulled wine.
