Here we trade cobblestones for green grass and escape to the Englischer Garten, or English Garden! This isn’t just a park; it’s one of the largest urban parks in the world, a sprawling oasis of nature right in the heart of Munich!
So, the Englischer Garten wasn’t always called that. It was created in 1789 by Sir Benjamin Thompson (later Count Rumford), an American-born British scientist and advisor to the Bavarian government. He designed it as a public park for the people of Munich.
The park was originally called "Theodors Park," but it was soon renamed "Englischer Garten" because it was designed in the style of an English landscape garden, with naturalistic features like rolling hills, winding paths, and artificial streams.
The Englischer Garten stretches for several kilometers along the Isar River, and it encompasses a wide variety of landscapes, including forests, meadows, lakes, and beer gardens.
Fun fact: The Englischer Garten is larger than Central Park in New York City!
There are lots of places to see and activities to do, including:
The Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm): This iconic pagoda is a popular gathering place, especially during beer garden season.
The Kleinhesseloher See: A picturesque lake where you can rent a boat or simply relax by the water.
The Eisbach Wave: This artificial wave is a popular spot for surfers, even in the middle of the city!
The Japanese Tea House (Japanisches Teehaus): Offers traditional tea ceremonies and a peaceful atmosphere.
The Schönfeldwiese: The area for nude sunbathing.
Numerous Beer Gardens: The park has several large beer gardens where you can relax and enjoy a traditional Bavarian beer and a pretzel.
In the park is very nice to walk in.
