Fünf Höfe stands as a testament to Munich’s unique blend of historical depth and contemporary innovation. Located in the heart of the city’s central district, the complex traces its roots to a site that has seen continuous development since the late Middle Ages, with Theatinerstraße itself appearing on city maps as early as the 14th century. The area flourished during the reign of Elector Maximilian I in the 17th century, when Munich expanded as a hub of the Bavarian court and trade. In the 19th century, the site underwent further transformation, witnessing the rise of elegant commercial buildings that mirrored Munich’s status as a growing cultural metropolis. The modern incarnation of Fünf Höfe was conceived in the aftermath of World War II’s devastation, when urban redesign and reconstruction efforts shaped the face of central Munich. In 1997, Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron initiated a large-scale redevelopment, seamlessly fusing historic façades with striking modern spaces. The ‘Five Courts’—Arcadenhof, Viscardihof, Prannerpassage, Maffeihof, and Perusahof—reflect a dynamic interplay of light, space, and function, winning the Deutscher Städtebaupreis (German Urban Development Prize) in 2002 for their exemplary urban design. Today, Fünf Höfe is not only a vibrant destination for shopping and culture but also home to the renowned Hypo-Kunsthalle, which showcases major art exhibitions, and incorporates relics from centuries past, such as sections of medieval stonework and 19th-century ironwork. Its ongoing evolution continues to narrate the layered history of Munich’s cityscape.
