Odeonsplatz is a large square in central Munich. This isn’t just any square; it’s a grand and historic space that has witnessed some of the most significant events in Munich’s history.
Odeonsplatz is named after the Odeon, a concert hall that once stood on the north side of the square. While the Odeon is no longer there (it was destroyed during World War II), the name has stuck, reminding us of the square’s long association with culture and the arts.
Odeonsplatz has been the site of many important events throughout Munich’s history, from royal processions to military parades to political rallies. It’s a place where the city has celebrated its triumphs, mourned its losses, and witnessed moments that have shaped its identity.
One of the most significant events to take place on Odeonsplatz was the Beer Hall Putsch in 1923. This was a failed attempt by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party to seize power in Bavaria. The putsch was ultimately unsuccessful, but it marked a turning point in Hitler’s rise to power. It is one of the events that makes Odeonsplatz one of Munich’s important historical places.
The architecture Odeonsplatz special. The square is framed by some of Munich’s most iconic buildings, including the Theatinerkirche, the Feldherrnhalle, and the Hofgarten. These buildings create a sense of grandeur and symmetry, making Odeonsplatz a truly impressive space.
Speaking of the Feldherrnhalle, this open-air loggia is one of the most recognizable landmarks on Odeonsplatz. It was built in the 19th century to honor the Bavarian army, and it’s adorned with statues of Bavarian military leaders.
Take a look at the Viscardigasse, a narrow street leading off Odeonsplatz. This street is also known as "Dodgers’ Alley" because during the Nazi era, people avoided walking through Odeonsplatz (where Nazi ceremonies took place) by using this alley. It became a silent act of resistance, and now it’s marked by a bronze line on the pavement to commemorate this act.
