This is the Olympiaberg, or Olympic Mountain! Now, don’t let the name fool you, it’s not a towering peak, but a man-made hill that offers spectacular panoramic views of Munich and a fascinating glimpse into the city’s Olympic history. Get ready for a bit of a climb, but trust me, the reward is worth the effort!
So, the Olympiaberg wasn’t always a mountain. It was actually created from the rubble and debris left over after World War II. The city needed a place to dispose of all the wreckage, and they decided to create a hill on the northern edge of the city.
Then, in the lead-up to the 1972 Summer Olympics, the hill was transformed into a park, complete with walking paths, grassy slopes, and a summit that offers stunning views.
Today, the Olympiaberg is a popular recreation area for locals and tourists alike. The hill top is 565 m above the sea level. From the top of the hill, you can see pretty much the entire city of Munich, including the Alps on a clear day. It’s a perfect spot for taking photos, picnicking, or simply enjoying the scenery.
It also lets you see the entire Olympic Park with a bird’s eye view.
The 1972 Summer Olympics were a major event for the city, and the Olympiaberg is a tangible reminder of that legacy.
