Theatine Church

Theatinerkirche, or Theatine Church going to knock your socks off with its bright white facade and ornate Baroque interior. It’s a striking example of Italian Baroque architecture right here in the heart of Munich!

So, the story behind the Theatinerkirche is actually quite romantic. It was built by Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife, Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, as a thank you for the birth of their long-awaited heir, Prince Max Emanuel. They had promised to build a church if God granted them a son, and when their prayers were answered, they kept their word in grand style!

Construction began in 1663, and it took over 20 years to complete. The church was designed by Italian architect Agostino Barelli, who brought the elegant and dramatic style of Italian Baroque architecture to Munich. Later, other architects added to it, changing its appearance from Roman architecture to Italian High Baroque.

What makes the Theatinerkirche so special?

That dazzling white facade! It’s a stark contrast to many of the other buildings in Munich, and it really stands out against the blue Bavarian sky. Take a moment to admire the intricate details, the statues, and the overall sense of grandeur.

The interior is even more impressive. It’s a symphony of white stucco, ornate carvings, and soaring arches. The overall effect is breathtaking, creating a sense of awe and reverence.

The high altar is a masterpiece in itself, adorned with intricate sculptures and paintings. It’s a focal point of the church, drawing your eye upwards towards the heavens.

And don’t miss the side chapels, each dedicated to different saints and featuring beautiful artwork. Each chapel is like a little jewel box filled with treasures.

Interestingly, although the style of the architecture and interior is Italian Baroque, a key Bavarian architect helped create the external facade after the Italian architect didn’t build the towers.
